Week 1 NCAA College Football Odds: Akron at No 18 Ohio State

If the University of Akron is ever going to beat big brother Ohio State in football, Saturday’s game might be the Zips’ best chance with Ohio State Buckeyes down four key suspended players. Still, it would be a mammoth upset if Akron Zips won and it is a 34-point underdog on Bodog Sportsbook’s NCAA College Football Odds.
Of course it’s been a tumultuous offseason for the Ohio State Buckeyes, who saw Coach Jim Tressel step down and star QB Terrelle Pryor leave school a year early in the wake of NCAA allegations. And suspended for the first five games this year are running back Dan Herron, offensive tackle Mike Adams, receiver DeVier Posey and defensive end Solomon Thomas. The first three are all returning starters, with Herron and Adams first-team All-Big Ten a year ago. Posey is the most experienced Buckeye at his position, by far.
Solomon Thomas played a key role in the Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas to end last season. Replacing Pryor, at least to take the first snap Saturday, is fifth-year senior Joe Bauserman. He was given the nod earlier this week by interim head coach Luke Fickell. But freshman QB Braxton Miller still will see action. Starting linebacker Etienne Sabino, who broke a bone in his hand about two weeks ago, had surgery last week and is expected to play with a cast on his hand. Running back Jaamal Berry, who likely would have started in place of Herron, has a hamstring injury and likely is out.
Akron Zips went 1-11 last season in coach Rob Ianello's first year. The Akron Zips were so bad they were outscored 421-187 for the season and lost to Gardner-Webb. They were the last team in the country to get a victory in 2010, were the third-worst scoring team in the nation and in the bottom 15 in points allowed. Ohio State, meanwhile, has won 32 straight home openers, by an average of three touchdowns. The last time Akron played at Ohio Stadium, it was 20-2. The last time any MAC team played there, OSU won 73-20.
