When the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat opened the regular season against each other, it turned out to be the highest-rated cable telecast of a regular-season NBA game ever and also was the most-bet regular-season game in Bodog’s history. Tonight Miami gets a chance for a little revenge for the opening-night defeat. The Heat are 7-point favorites on Bodog’s NBA Basketball odds.
Boston won that much-hyped opener 88-80, holding Miami to just nine points in the first quarter and the Celtics really never were threatened after that. Boston’s Big 3 outplayed Miami’s Big 3 and that’s not even counting Rajon Rondo and 17 assists. LeBron James had 31 points but also eight turnovers.
But in a way you can throw out that game because it was clear that Miami’s stars weren’t yet in sync and really both teams were obviously a bit rusty being as it was the first game of the season. However, both teams enter this showdown off a loss. Boston fell 89-87 on Monday in Dallas to end the Celtics’ five-game winning streak. Boston blew a five-point lead with less than two minutes left. Miami, meanwhile, lost its first home game of the season on Tuesday, 116-114 in overtime to the Utah Jazz despite LeBron’s first triple-double of the season. The Heat blew a 22-point lead as Utah’s Paul Millsap had 11 points in the final 30 seconds to force overtime.
Miami seems to have two weaknesses: physical frontcourt play and teams with excellent point guards. Boston qualifies in both categories. You know all about Rondo but Miami in its past two losses has been outscored in the paint by a combined total of 40 points as Chris Bosh has been pushed around. However, Boston’s frontcourt could be very shorthanded tonight as Shaquille O’Neal and Jermaine O’Neal are both questionable with injuries – Shaq has missed five games in a row. If both are out that could mean Boston likely would have to start undersized Glen Davis at center.
The Heat have outscored opponents, 221-146, in the third quarter. However, in the fourth quarter and overtime, they have been outscored, 216-186.
