The first day of NCAA Football bowl game betting of 2010 includes the New Orleans Bowl Battle between the Ohio Bobcats (8-4) out of the MAC and the Troy State Trojans out of the Sun Belt Conference.
Ohio blew their chance to win the East Division of the MAC and the trip to the MAC Championship Game that would have accompanied it by losing 29-6 at Kent State in their season finale. Troy comes into this contest as Sun Belt co-champions with a 6-2 conference mark.
The MAC has been the worst performing conference in bowl game betting over the last decade, going a dismal 15-25, 37.5 percent against the spread in bowls since 2000, including an even worse 7-15, 31.8 percent ATS in this underdog role.
Ohio reached this point on the strength of its defense, which allowed 21.8 points and 316.6 yards per game. The Bobcats were excellent against the run, allowing only 98.9 rushing yards per game on 3.2 yards per rush. Their pass defense was just ordinary though, as they surrendered 7.3 yards per attempt, and that may ultimately be their undoing here.
The Ohio offense was decent, averaging 28.0 points, but they did so while leaning heavily on a running game that averaged an impressive 170.9 yards per game. The passing game was hit-or-miss though due to the inconsistency of quarterback Boo Jackson, who had more interceptions (16) than touchdown passes (15).
The Sun Belt has actually held its own in bowl game betting in rather limited opportunities, going 6-5-1, 54.6 percent ATS since 2000. Its members were only installed as bowl favorites twice however, going 1-1 ATS on those occasions.
Troy has to rely on its offense, because quite frankly, the Trojans have one of the worst defenses of any bowl team. That may work just fine here though, as their offense is very balanced, averaging 32.9 points on 155.3 rushing yards and 289.4 passing yards per game.
Thus quarterback Corey Robinson can neutralize the great Ohio run defense by picking apart the ordinary Bobcats secondary, which may open up running opportunities later.
Yes, that Troy defense is allowing 31.0 points on 419.2 yards per game, but we are not sure Bobcats quarterback Jackson is reliable enough to take advantage, and if Troy puts up its usual points forcing Jackson and the normally run-heavy Ohio offense into a position where he has to throw, we like Troy’s chances of holding on in bowl game betting in this spot.
NCAA Football Insider Tip: This game should be decided by the quarterbacks, and Robinson of Troy has been the much more consistent passer. Also, the history of MAC disasters in bowl play is not a coincidence.
Make sure to lay the small spot with the Troy State Trojans when you do your bowl game betting on the New Orleans Bowl Saturday, December 18th.
